THE RETURN

An ENLIGHTEN ENTERTAINMENT PRODUCTION

A moving portrait of the incomparable New York City Ballet on its historic, emotion-filled tour to ballet’s most renowned city, St. Petersburg

Kevin Kline narrated this exclusive documentary, which provides an unprecedented look into the glamorous and veiled world of international ballet.  The film explores the historic return to St. Petersburg of the New York City Ballet to celebrate that city’s 300th anniversary.

One of the past centuries most influential artists, legendary choreographer George Balanchine would have been 100 years old this year. Born in St. Petersburg and trained at the Maryinsky Theater, he reated one of the greatest ballet companies in the world.  But because the Soviet Union was famously repressive of émigrés, most of Russia saw neither Balanchine’s New York City Ballet or any of his more than 400 ballets.

A creative team including director Richard Blanshard, cinematographer Dick Pope BSC and creative consultant Eric Bogosian spent weeks with the company both in New York and abroad. The film hronicles the tour, including substantial excerpts from City Ballet’s seven performances in the legendary Maryinsky Theatre, as well as the surprising challenges that accompanied the group of nearly 100 dancers, conductors and support staff halfway around the globe.

This engaging documentary not only includes stunning performance footage, but also highlights how the universal language of ballet cuts through social barriers, language and politics.
